At the first annual Sharon Springs Victorian Holiday Celebration it would have been hard to know what year it was without a calendar.

Sharon Springs may have historically been a summer spa town, but that didn’t stop the village from hosting a Victorian Christmas Celebration that would have rivaled any throughout the ages.  From an operetta performed on the second floor of the American Hotel, to Victorian dance lessons in this historic Roseboro ballroom, to the village’s annual tree lighting ceremony, the day was as memorable as it was colorful. Watch the slide show below to see the brilliant finery of the many visitors to the village this weekend. (Photos courtesy of Harold Levine or Thom Driver. Thank you.)

While everyone in the village worked tirelessly to deliver an amazing experience, special thanks must go to our Beekman 1802 colleague, Maria Vought, who first had the inspiration for the event. Thank you, Maria!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know that we at Classic Carriage Service enjoyed spending the afternoon with you for the filming of the Victorian Christmas. And we we're too frozen when we got done! I do, however, feel bad that Josh didn't get a chance to drive the horses, so I'd like to extend an invitation for both of you to come to my farm for driving lessons. Since winter has now arrived in Upstate New York, we will have to plan something for the spring time. (It is much more enjoyable when your fingers aren't frozen!) I will send you info on the sleigh rally within the next couple of weeks.

How charming! It's amazing how Beekman fever has spread. I was at a recent farmer's market here in Dallas, Texas checking out some goat milk soap. I asked if they were aware of your wonderful soap (which I own by the way) and the woman said I was one of hundreds that had asked that question. She was going home to watch. I'm ordering the fruitcake now. Merry Christmas!

I just wanna say, i didnt make it downtown for the actual activities ( my 2 year old grandson and 1 year old granddaughter were not feeling well and it was too cold for me to bring them out). but i live right up the hill from where it was all going on, and when i saw the horse and carriage coming down route 10 to head down the hill i grabbed my grandson and took him outside to see it. You stopped right in front of my house ( i think for filming purposes or they were preparing downtown for your arrival) I just want to let you know my grandson was THRILLED. He kept waving and saying HI to you and the horses and when you started up again, he kept waving and saying BYE. when i took him back inside he RAN to his grandpa and told him all about the horses with the BEST EVER smile on his face 🙂 makes the heart warm to see your children/grandchildren enjoy the simpler things. Thank you for that.

Hi, Kathy

The horses were SO beautiful, and the jingle of their bells really put us in the Christmas spirit. The person who owns the carriage has a sleigh rally at her farm on Jan 23 and they give free horse and sleigh rides. I'll get more info and post. I want to go to that!

It really was a fun day, with everybody getting into the season and the spirit of the day — whether in full-on Victorian drag or even just a fun hat or coat. I came up to make it a Girls' Day with my mom, and even though it meant hobbling around on a broken foot, I'm really glad I did.

Question, though: I took a bunch of pictures throughout the day, which I haven't had a chance to upload yet (stupid work!). Do you guys still want more, or do you have enough at this point?

I grew up in Sharon Springs at a time when it was still very busy and lively during the Summers and most of my friends worked in the hotels during the summer. By the time I was in my early twenties, business slowed down and over the next 10-15 years and the lower part of town turned into a virtual ghost town. It is so nice to see it coming back alive. Maybe next year I will make it back for a visit during the Harvest Festival.

Everyone looked amazing. It was such a beautiful day, the weather held out for a while too. It did drop a few degrees after the carriage arrived while we were waiting for the Mistletoe Moustache. I cannot wait for next year's celebration, we're even getting a room at The American.
