Beekman

Aural Decor

One of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to decorate any space is by filling it with music.   Using our laptop computer and wireless speakers, we can set up a sound scape throughout the house with just the touch of the button.  Guests are often humorously called to breakfast with the “Call To The Cows” section of the William Tell Overture by Gioacchino Rossini (you’ve heard it in Bugs Bunny cartoons for years).  A hike might be preceded by the sounds of reveille to get people in the spirit, and a simple sound track can set the theme for a dinner party even if you don’t have a single second to spend on decorations.

We carry this idea for music into the Mercantile, too.

Here are our selections from the Mercantile Holiday Playlist

Any and all of the Robert Shaw Christmas recordings–still the best recordings of traditional hymns and carols!

  2. Bracken says:

My mother listened to Spike Jones Christmas as a child, and so did we when we were kids …”All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!…”. It has been a lifelong favorite. It’s very fun, goofy, and some of the songs are sung in Pig-Latin!

  3. Donna in Whitefish Montana says:

Check out Snow Angels by Over the Rhine! My husband discovered them a few years ago while on his long commute home from work in a snowstorm. We have bought most of their cds and love their sound!

I’m really enjoying a new version this year of one of my long-time favorites: “Baby It’s Cold Outside” sung by Chris Colfer and Darren Criss from the ‘GLEE’ Christmas album.
And – ditto for “Winter Wonderland” by Johnny Mathis. I’ve played that one every Christmas since I was a kid and the album was a new release.

  13. John McPherson says:

I would add “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” sung by Nat King Cole AND “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” by Johnny Mathis. My Christmas isn’t complete without them.

My sister just posted about Zooey’s singing on Elf, yesterday. She has a great voice. I need to find those songs, above, and make a cd.

My absolute favorite Christmas song is “O Holy Night”. Makes me cry and tingle, at the same time.

Where do you find most of the songs? Have you heard them before or do you just look up your favorite artists and see what they’ve recorded?
