This is our BIGGEST! CONTEST! EVER!!! (so far)
Last year we decided to do a recipe contest. You’ve all seen those, right? Us, too. So we decided to put a Beekman 1802 twist on it.
We created the Beekman 1802 Heirloom Recipe Contest. We asked you to share your recipes but also the stories behind them. By the end of the contest, we had over 1,000 entries to sort through. We read the stories first to narrow down the field because we believe it is the story and the memories behind a recipe that make them special—that make them heirlooms.
This year, in honor of the release of the Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook, we’ve partnered with Bon Appetit magazine to make the contest even bigger than last year.
One grand prize winner will win a trip to NYC where we and the editors of Bon Appetit magazine are going to throw a party JUST FOR YOU in the amazing test kitchens of Bon Appetit!!
Others will win amazing prizes from Terrain—the store that we could literally spend the rest of our lives in (if we didn’t have a farm to run!)
All entries must be received by Oct 17, 2011

Hi, Christina
The winner was Chicken a la Gaetana submitted from a woman in San Francisco. We hope to get the winning recipe and story posted soon.
Hi Brent & Josh-
I just saw your reply to Lisa about the recipe contest winner having been chosen. Wow! 8,000 submissions?! Were the other prizes awarded as well?
My mother in law’s story was in the final 10 and my family and I were wondering which of them won! Thanks guys!
Hi, Lisa
There were over 8,000 submissions! The winning recipe was from a young woman from Mill Valley, CA. We hope to have it posted on the site soon
Hello Brent and Josh! Who won the recipe contest? I entered a blueberry square recipe but wasn’t sure when the winners were chosen. Thanks.
Although I am not entering the contest, I do have a food story you may enjoy. I’m the oldest of 12 childern. When mom was having sibling #7 both my grandmothers would come help out. Grandma was from Ireland and nanny from Norway. They never called each other by their 1st names. They addressed each other by Mrs. Shanagher & Mrs. Knudsen. One day they wanted to make stew. One wanted Irish stew the other, what ever stew they make in Norway. After debating back and forth, yes Mrs. Shanagher, no Mrs. Knudsen they decided to combined their stews. Mom had a pressure cooker she never used, but was kepted in the every back of the cabinet. They found it, put the stew in, and it was only a matter of time before there was a loud explosion!!!! Stew hanging from the ceiling and all over the kitchen!!!!!I don’t recall what was for dinner that night, but it definately was not stew.
Whew! Just got my entry in! So happy to finally have the recipe and story documented (it’s well over 100 yrs old!!) Who would think my great-grandmother could make chocolate and potatoes work in a dessert?!?
Good luck, Mike!!
Thanks for opening your garden at the Harvest Festival. I picked fava beans which I have not seen in a garden for probably at least 25 years! I entered the recipe contest with an old family recipe that I hadn’t thought about in years….thanks for sparking that dream!
Hi, Shiri
Yes. You can enter the library and the Bon Appetit contests. Good luck!
My local library is hosting a tasting contest for this on Nov. 1st and will pick a winner to go on to the next round – or something like that. My question is: If my dish does not get chosen by the library, then it stops there …. but if I send my recipe and story in to you by Oct 17th….then do I have a greater chance? Can I enter the dish/story at the library AND on this site to be sure it gets to you?
I love the Beekman Boys! My husband and I watch your show religiously. I actually read the Bucolic Plague and as a result planted a completely heirloom garden this summer. You boys rock!
Ok. Just submitted my little pie recipe. Hesitated, but it’s done now. Good luck boys with all your endeavors!
HI, Chic
Thank you for thinking of us for your gift. We are so happy that you like the book. If you are close to one of our upcoming signings (check the Events tab on the homepage) we can sign it there, or, if not, you can always send us a copy in the mail to the Mercantile with an envelope to send it back to you
My partner Bob and I would love to give your new cookbook (signed) to friends this Christmas. Can we purchase signed copies? We got ours today, it is beautiful!
Thanks
chic
Got my recipe in last week.
I read your book, Bucolic Plague this summer and loved it. I can not however find your TV show on this fall’s schedule. Are you still filming or was it a limited run?
Maybe I could do an internship with you two and learn to cook. One would think at my age it might be time. sue t.
It sounds like you should enter…multiple times! Enter a story and a recipe from each relative!
Bought the cookbook when you were on QVC. You two looked great! Can’t wait to get the book.
Midwest girl from rural Kansas…cook-from-scratch grandmas, grandpa ( yeah, he made his own ketchup not catsup, baby!) big, thick, fabulous, funny cook-up-a-storm aunts, mom, dad, root cellars, canning, um, gee, should I enter! Brent? Josh? What say you?
Hi, Sari. Get the cookbook. The community will teach you!
Wish I could cook so I could enter! Anyway, we enjoyed Harvest Fest. Thank you Sharon Springs and the Beekman Boys for your hospitality.
Hmmm….came home from Harvest Fest this past weekend with a great head of purple cabbage from the garden tour of the Fabulous Beekman Boys and turned it into a Polish dish! Will have to take a pic before it is all gone! Thanks for sharing the veggies!
My husband and I have the best recipe. I am refining it now and we are going to enter. Wish us luck! Fingers crossed:0

The muffins were fantastic, Suz
I LOVE Terrain – could also spend all my time on their website and all my cash and more as well. Great contest idea, I love heirloom recipe!
Just went online to view Terrain’s website. Wow!! what a store, I can see why you like it so much. In fact, I did order a couple of items. Since I never get to NY at least I can visit a really awesome store. Thank you so much. Oh, and thanks for being so kind at the Harvest Fest even though I think my lemon verbena biscuits weren’t the best I’ve made.
