On a recent trip to Québec, I was introduced to the work of artist Marina Dieul, a Montreal-based artist who specializes in portraiture. Born in France, Dieul moved to Canada in early 2000 where she has been living and working ever since. I’ve fallen especially in love with her imaginative animal portraits, five of which are shown below. Dieul depicts small creatures from the North American woodland emerging from the mats they are framed in, giving them a three-dimensional quality. The mats and the frames are painted as part of the picture, which I find really charming. Dieul is a member of the Portrait Society of Canada, the Portrait Society of America, and has been selected as a Living Master by the Art Renewal Center. She has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Kingston Prize for portraiture. Click here to see more of her work.
