Beekman

Top 10 things I’ve learned from goats.

I think I've learned more about life after three years in the country than 15 years in NYC.

10. Don’t butt heads with anyone who has bigger horns.

9. The grass is always greener when someone else cuts it, bales it, and totes it over to where you’re already lying down.

8. Better the same old milking hands every day than getting used to a whole new set of callouses.

7. If you’re not sure about something, go ahead and taste it. You can always spit it out.

6. The manure may pile up in the winter, but it keeps the barn warm. Sometimes it’s just one sh*tty trade-off after another.

5. If there is someplace to stand around and do nothing that is higher up than the current place you’re standing around doing nothing, it’s worth the effort to move.

4. If everyone else is running away in the same direction, join them now, ask questions later.

3. Getting mud between your toes is not as poetic as people make it out to be. Better to stay out of the rain in the first place.

2. There’s no better pillow than someone else’s tummy.

1. Fences are mere suggestions.

Wonderful! Would be great as a poster with this picture.

  2. Coming late to this party. Just found your show. Can’t wait to see what you two are up to each week.

Josh I am still laughing at these. I have to say as an Artist I full hardheartedly agree with Number one.

I hope Josh has finely gotten to give up the city and move to the Beekman full time.

Hi Fab B Boys! I absolutely LOVE your show and enjoy watching the banter between you. I can’t wait to read your book!

I’m a West Coast city girl but proud to say I come from a long line of midwest farmers. Your show has helped me rediscover what an important role my farming ancestors have played in my life and equally important I’m reminded how we should appreciate and celebrate the planet we live on. I’ve truly gained a renewed appreciation for everything I consume.

Keep up the good work guys. You’re, well, fabulous!! Oh and, by the way, I’m trying to figure out a way to have a goat in my little yard in the city! haha!

    Hugs, Cindy

  4. Ruth Pierson says:

We love the show! We moved to a farm in February and have 14 goats now. My husband and I are paralleling many of your adventures and we are comforted by the humor and compassion that you both have. We look forward to your show every week.

The best part of the show is your relationship and its ebbs and flows and your love and humanity.

    Ruth from Krum, TX

  5. Susan C says:

Oh My gosh you guys are sooooo funny ! I just finished watching the episode where you thought Polkaspot was sick. I swear I have seen that episode at least 5 times and I laughed just as hard the 5th as I did the first.Pokie is a true Diva.
I was blessed with daughters, but I would have been happy to have either of you guys for a son.
    Love you guys !
    Susan

  6. Lynda Barr says:

Read about you in House Beautiful on Friday, found the show on Saturday and I’m hooked. I’ve caught the complete season up and I’m not looking forward to the wait between new episodes. Have to admit I did fast forward the harvesting of Porky and Bess, but I agree we should value what we eat, as you did. I’m still thinking about the ’99 cent burger’ comment and what I can take from it.
I wish you both the very best and I look forward to seeing your success.

  7. Jeanette berry says:

Josh. I spit my drink out while watching the mating goat episode. Your comments made me snort. Just finished i am not myself-fantastic! Brent. As a control freak I understood your soap dilemma. I so wanted to be there to help and control together. See you both hopefully at farm tour in sept.

  8. Dr. Brent says:

    Hi, Ellen

The pond on the farm is stocked with bass

  9. baaaaaadgurl says:

I love your show, can’t wait each week for the next episodes. If ever you need us, your fans, help keeping the show on,please let us know. Ilove watching the goat cam, waiting to see one of the goats drive off one night with the tractor instead of climbing on it!!! Best wishes for success with the Beekman line. keep more coming. Luv ya both.

  11. Margaret Joseph says:

My partner and I love the show. I bought The Bucolic Plague as my first purchased e-book and carry it around and read in it every chance I get–great stories! I read about the TV show in The Advocate so was watching for it’s debut and never miss an episode. I’ve also introduced it to my brother and Dad and they now enjoy it too. Just ordered some soap and a print copy of TBP for her B’day. I never want the show to end! I had never even heard of Planet Green before!

  12. Randy Nicholson says:

Just finished the book and I loved it…. My partner and I have a small business in a small Texas town. I know where your coming from. Keep up the good work! You guys are great!!!!!!!!!

  13. Connie Wedding says:

Never mind answering the cheese question, Brent. I just read your answer in my email. Thank you! XO

  14. Connie Wedding says:

OMG, you two are so funny, you totally make my day every time I come to this site or watch your show. Thank you so much for the enjoyment you two have given me since I discovered you! Josh, your wit and warmth amazes me, and Brent, I think you are as close as it gets to the male version of Martha, and that’s “a good thing”! BTW, how long does your cheese last in the fridge once it is cut, and what is the best thing to wrap it in, or the best container to put it in? Thank you!

I love your show. Just watched the one with Farmer John recuperating and the birth of the baby goats. I am so happy you both are making a go of the farm. The episode of wrapping all of the soaps was intense. I like all of the relationships, the new adventures, and the day to day workings of the farm. I hope it is picked up (I was reading other comments), and will add my 2 cents worth to try to get the show renewed.
Best of luck to all of you.

  17. Robert says:

Follow up to my last post…
I found a place on the Discovery website to post viewer comments to. For anyone interested in sending Discovery a request to pick the show up for a second season, you might want to go to:
    http://corporate.discovery.com/contact/viewer-relations/

  18. Robert says:

Wonderful show this week. Loved the baby goaties (I call them goaties for some weird reason!) and was glad to see Hallelujah made it out in good shape. She’s in good hands!

I heard on the Derek and Romaine show, Josh, that your show hasn’t been picked up for a second season!??!?!? What kind out outrage is this? Is there a person or department, for those of us who love the show (it’s my favorite on television believe it or not!) can write to to voice our opinion and desire for the show to remain on television???

PS: I love it when Farmer John gets emotional about his goats- he really loves those critters!

  19. Lisa (Amicone) Stowell says:

Hey Josh! I’m having a blast watching you on the farm. It’s been 20+ years (wow!)I’d love to reconnect sometime. I’ve got my lunch crowd hooked on following your latest drama each week. Brent, you’re a lucky guy. And it seems Josh has done well too!

  20. JulieEv Beverlin says:

    Thanks Brent….

    The hardware store….of course…

  21. Dr. Brent says:

    HI, Julie

We buy our muck boot where the real farmers do—at the hardware store

  22. JulieEv Beverlin says:

LOVE…LOVE…LOVE the show, you guys are the greatest. Makes me want to move to the country, raise goats and have a big ass farm…I’m jealous…
By the way…where do you guys get your farm/muck boots from ???
and oh yeah..thought the book was great!!!

  23. Josh and Brent:

I have to say that your show is fantastic. I love every moment of it. And Josh I am finishing up your book as we speak. One of the best reads I’ve had in the past year. I want to thank you guys for opening your lives to us. Its wonderful to see a gay couple that loves each other and that even though you have had hard times in there you have made it through. I’m a single gay man hoping one day to find that special someone to share life with like you both have. Thank you for sharing your lives with me and the world.

  24. Dr. Brent says:

    Hi, Audrey

We have some AMAZING hand weavers who work for Beekman 1802–and they live practically next door to the farm. How convenient is that?!

  25. Dr. Brent says:

    Hi, Velta

I am completely stress free. I let it all out.

  26. Velta Wieters says:

Dear Josh and Brent, you all put such joy in my day. I laugh a lot during the show as well as do a lot of “remembering”. I’m an 82 year old grandma who just had a stent put in her heart and Dr.Brent you know that stress can make that necessary– so my dear– please try to “lighten up”. I do love the show as well as the two of you.

  27. Audrey says:

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Born and raised in Upstate NY, stuck in the desert southwest and missing it a little bit less thanks to you all sharing some of your life on the farm!

As a weaver I was pleased to see that you have some items that appear to be handwoven available for sale – do you have handweavers in Sharon Springs area?

I wish you both continued success, and as my mother always used to tell my husband and I, “be good to each other”.

  28. Nancy T. says:

We have really been enjoying your shows!
When I watched the Thanksgiving show, I could actually smell the wonderful aromas coming from your kitchen.
Is it too late to send your book to get autographed?
    Have a super day!:)

  29. Dr. Brent says:

    HI, Elise

Would love to dream up some woolen items!

  30. Elise Hiller says:

    Dear Beekman Boys–
Because Time Warner does not carry the show, I finally remembered to download the shows from Itunes! So fabulous!!!!! (but you knew that already). About 10 years ago I was the Village attorney for Sharon Springs (and still have a friend who lives there). I had met Doug who was on the Planning Board at the time…I think it was shortly after they had bought the American Hotel. I always loved coming to Sharon Springs, but was not out there too often…the Village of Cobleskill kept me busier.

I am so delighted for all your successes, particularly in showing the rest of the country what upstate NY has to offer.

I loved watching all the episodes and will look forward to stopping out one day for cheese and soap. Do you see the cheese at the Honest Weight Food Co-Op in Albany? (I sometimes volunteer at their counter, but you would love Gustav Ericson…the reigning Cheese Meister!).

All the best. Let me know if you add wool to your line up…lots of local knitters/dyers around here that would love to support you!

  31. Amanda says:

I just “discovered” your show and I love it–it’s so much fun to watch. The goats are so cute and funny, I’d love to be able to keep some as pets. Maybe one day I will escape the city too.

Congratulations on following your dream, and I wish you continued success.

  32. Craig Schuessler says:

My partner and I are big fans of the both of you and your show. We are currently on a family vacation in the mountains for MD and I just finished reading “The Bucolic Plague”…what a wonderful and inspirational story.

We are talking about planning our next family vacation in Sharon Springs. It sounds amazing.

I wish you both continued success both professionally and more importantly personally.

  33. Lynnie Schoener says:

I can’t wait to wake up in the mornings and watch each episode on Planet Green…they jump start my mornings, and make me wish I had your wonderful life! I hope to someday visit Sharon Springs and meet all the wonderful people there. You two are a hoot and I hope you keep doing shows forever!!!! My husband and I just love you both!

  34. Sally says:

    Dear Dr. Brent and Josh
I can’t believe how addicted I am to your show. There is so much horrible TV these days that you two are refreshing, inspiring and just plain fun. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us unknowns out there in TV land. I only wish I could be fortunate enough to visit Sharon Springs and Beekman one day
Best of luck to you both in all your endeavors
    Best
    Sally

  35. Helen & Vanessa from California says:

    Josh and Brent -

Hello from sunny California! Just want to say that we LOVE you guys! Your show is DVR’d so we never miss it.

Your farm is beautiful, as is your relationship.

Wishing you much success and happiness!

    Helen and Vanessa

  36. Isabella says:

How does it feel to be in a haunted mansion? And how did you know that she thinks you 2 are imaginary friends?

  37. Lisa Leavelle says:

I LOVE the comment, fences are mere suggestions. Oh how true when one owns goats. They definitely keep things interesting and entertaining. Nothing like getting up in the morning and finding six of them lounging on your wicker porch furniture, chewing their cudd like they own the place.
A question, what is that on Darkness’s head ? Is it a horn that was cut down and grew back? It is near his left ear>

  38. Ken says:

    Hi Josh!

Did you explain Number 7 somewhere?

I am afraid to go and see if you did??

Love number 1! Barriers/fences should never keep people in or out….

  39. ashley terrill says:

first off i love the show!! i am also a goat farmer, but i do meat goats, i dont eat them but i do breed them so they can produce more breeding stock. just to let u guys know i have a little girl goat at my house that would love to come live with u lol. good luck farming :)

  40. peter says:

    hi,

i love your show. in part because of the farming, but mostly because it shows the resilience needed to have a healthy relationship. my husband is more like josh, and i’m more like brent. josh, cold feet make for great revenge – just ask my husband. :)

    xxoo

  41. Deborah says:

Brent and Josh: As one of the original Beekman groupies, I want to say thank you for allowing me to live my dream through yours. As a side note, keep wrapping the soap because my order for the holidays is on its way to Sharon Springs! Love to you both, the goats, Farmer John and of course, Polka Spot!

  42. Emily says:

I read and loved the book. It has been passed along to a friend, but I insist on getting it back. I am loving the TV show! Some things on this list are so hilarious, especially the one about everyone running! Other lessons learned are sweet. And the one I will share with my kids is number 7. Go ahead and try something and spit it out if you don’t like it. Words to live by!! Thanks for the laughs and for sharing your experiences. Can’t wait for Wednesday night!

  43. Bill and Wally says:

We love that you are both in beautiful upstate taking care of that great place. We’ve had our farm here in gorgeous Ephratah for 20 years, and LOVE what you’re trying to do. Wally loves Josh’s writing, and I (Bill) love Brent’s Marthistic tendencies. If anyone thinks that cleaning barn windows for a garden party is too much – PLEASE. Some people just don’t get it. Anyhow – the show’s lots of fun.

    Your fellow Countrymen

  44. Hi dude , This is excellent article for my homework from university Do u have twitter account ?? i want to follow your twitt . Good bye

  45. Kate says:

I just have to tell you that I love, LOVE the show and you guys are a treat. My mom grew up on a 300 acre apple orchard in Michigan and I never, ever, dreamed that I would envy that…but I do! About a year ago, I got the crazy idea to get a couple laying hens for our backyard here in Florida. Of course that led to more, and now I am attempting to start a breeding operation of these awesome French chickens. Next on the agenda: goats, so I can have fresh milk for my soapmaking. Our three acres of Florida jungle just isn’t big enough for everything I have to have! My mom is proud-slash-horrified, I think.

You guys are totally inspiring me, and if I didn’t live 1000 miles away, I would possibly stalk you (but in a good way!). :)

  46. Janice says:

My husband and I bought a hobby farm with the idea to become self-sufficient. We moved to Northern California 3 months ago. I was so thrilled to see your series from the beginning. It just let us know that we made the right decision. We are loving every moment of it. Right now, my husband has to travel during the week to bring in money while we get this going, but it is totally worth it. Do you make your own cheese or have someone do it for you? Your farm is beautiful and farmer John is delightful as well. We can’t wait to see more.

  47. Jen says:

I love reading these entries about farm life. One thing I wanted to mention to you guys is that I think your product development is spectacular. I’m a business owner and very interested in product creation; your design and marketing is impeccable! Kudos. It’s an inspiration!

And I love the goat humor. :-)

  48. Emily says:

I love this show!! I found it on the first week it started, and I’ve been watching it ever since!!

  49. Connie Mahin says:

Hi, I just found your show and have really enjoyed watching it!!! We (my husband is now in the mix) understand the need for space as well as th eneed for that space to pay for itself if possible….We love watching you and are looking forward to trying your products!
