Younger Than Springtime

Sun sets on another season.

Sun sets on another season.

Each year at New Market Elementary School in Sophia, North Carolina, there’s a May Day celebration.  Each of the grades works for months to perfect their own special dance to perform for the community.  There’s also a May Court with a King and Queen elected from the fifth grade class.  The May King and May Queen lead the processional down the steps of the library into the courtyard to the tune of Pomp & Circumstance, but even before the royalty emerges from the stacks of Newberry Award books, a boy and girl chosen from the kindergarten class come forth to present the scepter and the crown (resting on velvet pillows, of course!)

I celebrated my birthday this weekend (and received several wonderfully unexpected birthday wishes from  readers of this blog—thank you).  Could it be that it has been 30-some years since I held a bejeweled scepter in my grasp?

Fortunately, I have lost my lust for sparkly, shiny things (almost) and have traded scepter in for trowel, and thus spent the weekend playing in the dirt (some things never do change).

On Saturday morning we paid a visit to the annual plant sale at SUNY Cobleskill where almost any single plant goes for $1.  Back home after spending a grand total of $34, we toiled the rest of the day in the vegetable and flower gardens at the Beekman.

I would not be telling the truth if delusions of grandeur did not appear when the wind errantly scattered flower petals in the direct path of my feet.  Springtime is fit for a king.

    Brent,
If I had known it was your birthday, I would have sent my birthday wishes to you before the day, but I send them now : Wishing you a wonderful year, full of new experiences and happiness.

I think a ‘be-dazzled’ long-handled garden trowel is in order, for those moments when you’re feeling royal… “If I, were the King, of the gaarrrdennnn…” (sung in my best cowardly lion voice) Hope you had a great birthday!

That is the weeping cherry outside of the kitchen window. I was preparing dinner at sunset and just had to snap that shot. Our camera is never far away.

Happy Belated B-day from another May B-day Person. What a year for blooms! A armful of flowers is always better than a scepter.
